'Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.' Proverbs 22:6
History
Intent
At St Nicholas CE Primary School, we provide a high quality History Curriculum which inspires pupils to develop a curiosity and fascination with Britain’s past and that of the wider world and instil a love and enjoyment for learning about History so that pupils want to question and find out more independently.
Our teaching equips pupils with a knowledge and understanding of British History and that of the wider world, which helps to stimulate children’s curiosity and fascination to know more about the past. It also allows pupils to develop their understanding of the lives of significant people and events, the process of change, the diversity of different societies and the relationships between different groups and the way this has influenced our lives today. Furthermore our History Curriculum also allows our pupils to begin to understand their own identity and the challenges of their time.
History is taught around the main skills of:
- Knowledge
- Chronology
- Interpretations of History
- Historical Enquiry
- Communication
Within each area we focus on:
- Asking questions about today and the past
- Making comparisons
- Research and the validity of research
- Using historical sources both primary and secondary
- Developing conclusions
Implementation
We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensure that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. Existing knowledge is checked at the start of each new topic. This ensure that teaching is informed by the children's starting points and takes account of pupil voice. Lesson content and tasks are designed to provide appropriate challenge to all learners, in line with our commitment to inclusion.
It is important that children develop the skills of a geographer by fully immersing them in all areas of the subject. The local area is fully utilised to achieve desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside the classroom. School trips and fieldwork are provided to give first-hand experiences, which enhance children's understanding of the world beyond their locality.
Impact
The impact of the History curriculum at St Nicholas can be seen through:
- Clear evidence that our children have shown progress and attainment in line with the National Curriculum
- Our children demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject and can talk with confidence about history
- Our children demonstrate an understanding of a range of historical vocabulary which can be applied confidently
- As historians, our children can use their skills to pose questions, evaluate evidence and draw conclusions.
